Default Wouldn't it have been cool if... (ingame event idea)

According to the released lore, the charr overrun ascalon. However I was thinking that it might have been better if there were some way to decide the "winner" of the war via some sort of ingame event.

My idea is that have some sort of temporary PvP arenas set up. People can choose either the charr or ascalon sides (people who choose charr will look like charr while in the arena). Then in an AB style format the two sides could PvP in GW1 for a month or so. There could be 3 maps (ascalon base, neutral territory, charr base). If the event ends with one of the two bases being the maps used for the PvP match, that side loses. If it lands on the neutral one, then it is a draw or maybe the war is still raging in GW2, some 200 years later.

A similar thing could also be used to determine the fates of factions and elona.

IMO the game is supposed to be about guild wars so why can't we let said guild wars to help determine the setting of GW2?

Or just leave it as a permanent type of arena... simulate a war where no side ever can completely dominate the other.

everyone complains about GW2 taking too long to be released; introducing things like that, especially if it would alter how GW2 would be, would further push back the release date. I say nay.

I have no opposition to this idea - except for three things:

First, it should not determine how the game is set up.

Second, it should be perminant.

Third, it would be better for GW2 - and to have the whole town owning thing like in Factions, but it being Charr vs Ascalonians (there are still Ascalonians in GW2 with the current lore). This can also be done for Krytan Royal Family vs Remnants of White Mantle and Dredge vs Norn. But doing that much, might get too complicated.

All in all, don't care if this idea is implemented as long as it doesn't affect official lore - like how current AB doesn't.

This sounds a lot like the World PvP they have planned for GW2... personally I like the idea a lot.

My thoughts exactly. This would be a cool concept for the future conflicts in GW 2.

That's why it should be limited to a short time event. While you are waiting for the event to transpire, you can be working on other things.

In NF missions often took place in areas that you can return to and explore later. So you could build the zones and prepare the NPC's for an area (because the ghosts of ascalon will just be reskins) and then work on the missions and quests for the ascalon region afterwords.

Konig, the idea was to base the lore on things the players do and give them a chance to influence things via their actions in game.

short time event has nothing to do with it. Development for the event takes away from production time.

THEN you suggested the outcome of that change what they do for GW2 after the event ends. Which means if the outcome isn't EXACTLY what they already want for GW2, then they have to scrap anything they ALREADY did, and start over, for this NEW plan.

Though with everyone complaining about GW2 update, if ya'll didnt know its unoffical bumped to 2010-2011. So, 1-2 years, i dont think that it will cause THAT much of a problem, especially if there is that new development content team....

I personally really like this idea (i love presearing and ascalon), and instead why not try to make it like a player ran event, toss in prizes for the team, idk how you would count wins and losses, but hey, i would attend.

/agree

I really like this idea, even if they had it in GW2 as a reenactment or something of that nature.

Charr side would of course win because most of the players would choose Charr just so they can look like one while fighting.

Make the side you start on random. Also, a lot of players choosing Charr =/= winning.

Actually in a way it kinda does.
The more you have playing on one side the better the odds are that you MIGHT get people that know what theyre doing.
Even making it random I still will /notsign I just don't care for the idea myself.

Alliance Battles seem to prove otherwise.

Anyway, as a one off event just prior to the launch of GW2, to get us hyped, sure, could be fun, much like the Factions related content that appeared in Prophecies to herald the new campaign (though on a larger scale). Affecting the nature of GW2 by such an event, lol, no. I want GW2 to be released sometime in the next few years, not add another half a decade onto the waiting time.

This

As for my "Wouldn't it have been cool if...", mine would be if roller beetle, dragon arena, and all that sort was permanently opened to the public.

Actually, I wouldn't see a problem with this. If one side has more players than the other, isn't that an indication that more players want that side to win?

Although my understanding is that the Charr-Ascalon conflict is continuing in GW2, just that the initial front lines are a little further south. I'm hoping it IS at least in theory possible for the Ascalonians to get back up to the Great Wall or beyond, however... but I'm concerned that with implications that a major Charr city will be where Rin was that this won't be possible.

The idea of char vs ascalonians is a cool idea. However, it shouldnt decide the outcome of the war because the whole game is based on that the Char DID win the war. How can it alter the outcome? Maybe Im missing something here. Im really not seeing your reasoning here for this. In presear I could see skirmish battles like this. But again the outcome is always the Char win. In post sear it seems a waste, because they won. And in GWEN a new alliance between a faction of Char and Humans is being forged leading us into GW2. So how is this supposed to fit in and stay with-in the Lore already established in the game if the players can choose the side that wins? I need more detail on what the OP is asking for here and a time frame for it.

Agree DragonRogue.... it does seem kinda pointless and if the Charr lost... well erm the game doesn't exist... as no need for Rurik (or Ruprick as I like to call him) to head to Kryta...

Dont think we can rengineer the whole game based on a "what if"
